How to Convert Exabytes to Petabytes

To convert exabytes to petabytes, multiply by 1,000 (using SI decimal). Both units measure storage capacity—the difference is scale. See also: Petabytes to Exabytes converter.

EB: An exabyte is 1,000 petabytes or 10^18 bytes. Used to measure global internet traffic and massive data volumes. Use our Exabytes to Yottabits calculator.

PB: A petabyte is 1,000 terabytes or 1,000,000,000,000,000 bytes. Used for large-scale enterprise and cloud storage. Learn more: convert Pebibytes to Petabytes.

1 EB = 1,000 PB (using SI decimal standard) — which means there are 1,000petabytes in every exabyte.

EB to PB Conversion Formula

// Convert EB to PB

PB = EB × 1,000

// Reverse: Convert PB to EB

EB = PB × 0.001

EB to PB Conversion Examples

100 EB = 100,000 PB

256 EB = 256,000 PB

500 EB = 500,000 PB

1,000 EB = 1,000,000 PB

2,048 EB = 2,048,000 PB

Binary Standard (Base 1024)

Using binary calculation: 1 EB = 1,024 PB

100 EB = 102,400 PB

1,000 EB = 1,024,000 PB

1,024 EB = 1,048,576 PB

What Is a Exabyte?

An exabyte is 1,000 petabytes or 10^18 bytes. Used to measure global internet traffic and massive data volumes. Use our Yottabytes to Petabits conversion.

The exabyte is a SI decimal unit of digital information storage. It uses base 1,000 following the SI (International System of Units) standard. Learn more: MiB/s to Kibibits Per Second converter.

Common uses: Global internet traffic, hyperscale data centers, worldwide digital data estimation Try the Exabytes to Mb calculator.

1 EB = 8 × 10¹⁸ bits = 1 × 10¹⁸ bytes.

The exabyte can be abbreviated as EB; for example, 1 exabyte can be written as 1 EB.

What Is a Petabyte?

A petabyte is 1,000 terabytes or 1,000,000,000,000,000 bytes. Used for large-scale enterprise and cloud storage. See also: convert Mb to Petabytes.

The petabyte is a SI decimal unit of digital information storage. It uses base 1,000 following the SI (International System of Units) standard. Check out our Kilobytes to Pb.

Common uses: Data centers, cloud storage providers, scientific research, enterprise archives You might also need: how many MB/s in Gigabits Per Second.

1 PB = 8 × 10¹⁵ bits = 1 × 10¹⁵ bytes.

The petabyte can be abbreviated as PB; for example, 1 petabyte can be written as 1 PB.

SI Decimal vs Binary: Why Two Different Standards?

When converting exabytes to petabytes, different tools may give slightly different results. This is because there are two competing standards for measuring digital storage:

Standard Base 1 KB equals Used By
SI Decimal 1000 1,000 bytes Hard drive manufacturers, macOS, network speeds
Binary (IEC) 1024 1,024 bytes Windows, Linux (partially), RAM specifications

Why Does My Hard Drive Show Less Space Than Advertised?

This difference in standards explains the common "missing hard drive space" confusion.

Example: A "500 GB" Hard Drive

  • Contains exactly: 500,000,000,000 bytes
  • macOS (SI Decimal): Displays 500 GB (divides by 1,000³)
  • Windows (Binary): Displays 465 GB (divides by 1,024³)

The Verdict: Same bytes, same drive—just different math. No space is actually missing.

Note: Our calculator defaults to SI decimal (base 1000) to match the box label. To match Windows, toggle the standard at the top of the calculator.

💡 Storage Engineer Tip

Manufacturers label drives using SI decimal (base 1000). Windows divides by 1024 instead—that's why a "1 TB" drive shows as 931 GB. Same bytes, different math.
