How to Convert Gibibytes to Petabits

To convert gibibytes to petabits, multiply by 8 then adjust for scale. This converts byte-based storage measurements to bit-based units. See also: Petabits to Gibibytes converter.

GiB is a byte-based unit used for measuring file sizes and storage capacity. Use our Gibibytes to Kibibytes calculator.

Pb is a bit-based unit—multiply bytes by 8 to get bits. Try the convert Exbibits to Petabits.

1 GiB = 0.000008589934592 Pb (using SI decimal standard) — or equivalently, 1 Pb = 116,415.321827GiB.

GiB to Pb Conversion Formula

// Convert GiB to Pb

Pb = GiB × 0.000008589934592

// Reverse: Convert Pb to GiB

GiB = Pb × 116,415.321827

GiB to Pb Conversion Examples

100 GiB = 0.000858993459 Pb

256 GiB = 0.002199023256 Pb

500 GiB = 0.004294967296 Pb

1,000 GiB = 0.008589934592 Pb

2,048 GiB = 0.017592186044 Pb

What Is a Gibibyte?

A gibibyte is 1,024 mebibytes or 1,073,741,824 bytes. This is what operating systems actually display for storage. See also: Terabytes to Megabytes conversion.

The gibibyte is a IEC binary unit of digital information storage. It uses base 1,024 following the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) standard. Check out our MiB/s to Gibibits Per Second converter.

Common uses: Windows/macOS file sizes, SSD actual capacity, RAM modules Try the Gibibytes to TB calculator.

1 GiB = 9 × 10⁹ bits = 1 × 10⁹ bytes.

The gibibyte can be abbreviated as GiB; for example, 1 gibibyte can be written as 1 GiB.

What Is a Petabit?

A petabit is 1,000 terabits or 10^15 bits. Used for measuring massive network throughput. Try the convert PB to Petabits.

The petabit is a SI decimal bit unit of digital information storage. It uses base 1,000 following the SI (International System of Units) standard. Use our Gibibits to Tb.

Common uses: Internet exchange points, submarine cables, global network traffic You might also need: how many ZB/s in Exabits Per Second.

1 Pb = 1 × 10¹⁵ bits = 125 × 10¹² bytes.

The petabit can be abbreviated as Pb; for example, 1 petabit can be written as 1 Pb.

SI Decimal vs Binary: Why Two Different Standards?

When converting gibibytes to petabits, different tools may give slightly different results. This is because there are two competing standards for measuring digital storage:

Standard Base 1 KB equals Used By
SI Decimal 1000 1,000 bytes Hard drive manufacturers, macOS, network speeds
Binary (IEC) 1024 1,024 bytes Windows, Linux (partially), RAM specifications

Why Does My Hard Drive Show Less Space Than Advertised?

This difference in standards explains the common "missing hard drive space" confusion.

Example: A "500 GB" Hard Drive

  • Contains exactly: 500,000,000,000 bytes
  • macOS (SI Decimal): Displays 500 GB (divides by 1,000³)
  • Windows (Binary): Displays 465 GB (divides by 1,024³)

The Verdict: Same bytes, same drive—just different math. No space is actually missing.

Note: Our calculator defaults to SI decimal (base 1000) to match the box label. To match Windows, toggle the standard at the top of the calculator.

💡 Storage Engineer Tip

The ~9.95% difference between binary and decimal units compounds at each level. A 1 TB drive shows as 931 GiB in Windows because of this standard mismatch—no space is actually lost.
