How to Convert Gigabits to Kibibytes

To convert gigabits to kibibytes, divide by 8 then adjust for scale. Since 1 byte = 8 bits, this conversion translates bit-based measurements to the byte-based units used for storage capacity. Learn more: converting Kibibytes to Gigabits.

Gb measures data in bits—commonly used for memory addressing and low-level data specifications. Learn more: Gigabits in Zettabytes.

KiB measures data in bytes—the standard unit for file sizes, storage capacity, and what you see in file explorers. Use our GiB to KiB.

1 Gb = 122,070.3125 KiB (using SI decimal standard) — which means there are 122,070.3125kibibytes in every gigabit.

Gb to KiB Conversion Formula

// Convert Gb to KiB

KiB = Gb × 122,070.3125

// Reverse: Convert KiB to Gb

Gb = KiB × 0.000008192

What Is a Gigabit?

A gigabit is 1,000 megabits or 1,000,000,000 bits. Used for high-speed network connections. Learn more: nibble to TiB converter.

The gigabit is a SI decimal bit unit of digital information storage. It uses base 1,000 following the SI (International System of Units) standard. You might also need: Pbps to TB/s calculator.

Common uses: Fiber internet speeds, enterprise networking, 10GbE connections Related: convert Gb to MiB.

1 Gb = 1 × 10⁹ bits = 125 × 10⁶ bytes.

The gigabit can be abbreviated as Gb; for example, 1 gigabit can be written as 1 Gb.

What Is a Kibibyte?

A kibibyte is 1,024 bytes using the IEC binary standard. More accurately represents computer memory addressing. You might also need: ZB → KiB.

The kibibyte is a IEC binary unit of digital information storage. It uses base 1,024 following the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) standard. Use our Gibibits to Kilobits.

Common uses: RAM specifications, operating system file sizes, memory allocation You might also need: Zebibytes Per Second to Exbibits Per Second converter.

1 KiB = 8,192 bits = 1,024 bytes.

The kibibyte can be abbreviated as KiB; for example, 1 kibibyte can be written as 1 KiB.

SI Decimal vs Binary: Why Two Different Standards?

When converting gigabits to kibibytes, different tools may give slightly different results. This is because there are two competing standards for measuring digital storage:

Standard Base 1 KB equals Used By
SI Decimal 1000 1,000 bytes Hard drive manufacturers, macOS, network speeds
Binary (IEC) 1024 1,024 bytes Windows, Linux (partially), RAM specifications

Why Does My Hard Drive Show Less Space Than Advertised?

This difference in standards explains the common "missing hard drive space" confusion.

Example: A "500 GB" Hard Drive

  • Contains exactly: 500,000,000,000 bytes
  • macOS (SI Decimal): Displays 500 GB (divides by 1,000³)
  • Windows (Binary): Displays 465 GB (divides by 1,024³)

The Verdict: Same bytes, same drive—just different math. No space is actually missing.

Note: Our calculator defaults to SI decimal (base 1000) to match the box label. To match Windows, toggle the standard at the top of the calculator.

💡 Storage Engineer Tip

The ~9.95% difference between binary and decimal units compounds at each level. A 1 TB drive shows as 931 GiB in Windows because of this standard mismatch—no space is actually lost.
