How to Convert Pebibytes to Exabytes

To convert pebibytes (binary/IEC) to exabytes (decimal/SI), multiply by 0.001125899907. Binary units use base 1,024, while decimal units use base 1,000—this creates small differences that accumulate at larger scales. Related: calculate EB to PiB.

PiB is a binary (IEC) unit where 1 PiB = 1,024 of the smaller unit. Operating systems like Windows typically display storage using binary calculations. Check out our PiB to Pb conversion rate.

EB is a decimal (SI) unit where 1 EB = 1,000 of the smaller unit. Storage manufacturers use decimal units, which is why a "1 TB" drive shows less in Windows. See also: converting Exbibits to Exabytes.

1 PiB = 0.001125899907 EB (using SI decimal standard) — or equivalently, 1 EB = 888.1784197001PiB.

PiB to EB Conversion Formula

// Convert PiB to EB

EB = PiB × 0.001125899907

// Reverse: Convert EB to PiB

PiB = EB × 888.1784197001

PiB to EB Conversion Examples

100 PiB = 0.112589990684 EB

256 PiB = 0.288230376152 EB

500 PiB = 0.562949953421 EB

1,000 PiB = 1.1258999068 EB

2,048 PiB = 2.3058430092 EB

What Is a Pebibyte?

A pebibyte is 1,024 tebibytes or 2^50 bytes. Used for large-scale enterprise storage in binary terms. Use our Megabytes in Bytes.

The pebibyte is a IEC binary unit of digital information storage. It uses base 1,024 following the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) standard. Try the bps to KB/s.

Common uses: Enterprise SAN storage, data center capacity planning, cloud infrastructure Learn more: PiB to MB converter.

1 PiB = 9 × 10¹⁵ bits = 1 × 10¹⁵ bytes.

The pebibyte can be abbreviated as PiB; for example, 1 pebibyte can be written as 1 PiB.

What Is a Exabyte?

An exabyte is 1,000 petabytes or 10^18 bytes. Used to measure global internet traffic and massive data volumes. Related: GB to EB calculator.

The exabyte is a SI decimal unit of digital information storage. It uses base 1,000 following the SI (International System of Units) standard. Learn more: convert Eib to Kb.

Common uses: Global internet traffic, hyperscale data centers, worldwide digital data estimation You might also need: ZiB/s → Yibps.

1 EB = 8 × 10¹⁸ bits = 1 × 10¹⁸ bytes.

The exabyte can be abbreviated as EB; for example, 1 exabyte can be written as 1 EB.

SI Decimal vs Binary: Why Two Different Standards?

When converting pebibytes to exabytes, different tools may give slightly different results. This is because there are two competing standards for measuring digital storage:

Standard Base 1 KB equals Used By
SI Decimal 1000 1,000 bytes Hard drive manufacturers, macOS, network speeds
Binary (IEC) 1024 1,024 bytes Windows, Linux (partially), RAM specifications

Why Does My Hard Drive Show Less Space Than Advertised?

This difference in standards explains the common "missing hard drive space" confusion.

Example: A "500 GB" Hard Drive

  • Contains exactly: 500,000,000,000 bytes
  • macOS (SI Decimal): Displays 500 GB (divides by 1,000³)
  • Windows (Binary): Displays 465 GB (divides by 1,024³)

The Verdict: Same bytes, same drive—just different math. No space is actually missing.

Note: Our calculator defaults to SI decimal (base 1000) to match the box label. To match Windows, toggle the standard at the top of the calculator.

💡 Storage Engineer Tip

The ~9.95% difference between binary and decimal units compounds at each level. A 1 TB drive shows as 931 GiB in Windows because of this standard mismatch—no space is actually lost.
