How to Convert Petabytes to Exabytes
To convert petabytes to exabytes, divide by 1,000 (using SI decimal). Both units measure storage capacity—the difference is scale. See also: Exabytes to Petabytes converter.
PB: A petabyte is 1,000 terabytes or 1,000,000,000,000,000 bytes. Used for large-scale enterprise and cloud storage. See also: Petabytes to Pebibits.
EB: An exabyte is 1,000 petabytes or 10^18 bytes. Used to measure global internet traffic and massive data volumes. See also: Eb → EB.
1 PB = 0.001 EB (using SI decimal standard) — or equivalently, 1 EB = 1,000PB.
PB to EB Conversion Formula
// Convert PB to EB
EB = PB × 0.001
// Reverse: Convert EB to PB
PB = EB × 1,000
PB to EB Conversion Examples
100 PB = 0.1 EB
256 PB = 0.256 EB
500 PB = 0.5 EB
1,000 PB = 1 EB
2,048 PB = 2.048 EB
Binary Standard (Base 1024)
Using binary calculation: 1 PB = 0.0009765625 EB
100 PB = 0.09765625 EB
1,000 PB = 0.9765625 EB
1,024 PB = 1 EB
What Is a Petabyte?
A petabyte is 1,000 terabytes or 1,000,000,000,000,000 bytes. Used for large-scale enterprise and cloud storage. See also: convert Mb to YB.
The petabyte is a SI decimal unit of digital information storage. It uses base 1,000 following the SI (International System of Units) standard. Check out our GiB/s to Tibps calculator.
Common uses: Data centers, cloud storage providers, scientific research, enterprise archives Try the PB to MiB converter.
1 PB = 8 × 10¹⁵ bits = 1 × 10¹⁵ bytes.
The petabyte can be abbreviated as PB; for example, 1 petabyte can be written as 1 PB.
What Is a Exabyte?
An exabyte is 1,000 petabytes or 10^18 bytes. Used to measure global internet traffic and massive data volumes. Try the GiB to EB.
The exabyte is a SI decimal unit of digital information storage. It uses base 1,000 following the SI (International System of Units) standard. Learn more: Nibbles in Megabits.
Common uses: Global internet traffic, hyperscale data centers, worldwide digital data estimation Check out our converting Mebibytes Per Second to Gibibits Per Second.
1 EB = 8 × 10¹⁸ bits = 1 × 10¹⁸ bytes.
The exabyte can be abbreviated as EB; for example, 1 exabyte can be written as 1 EB.

SI Decimal vs Binary: Why Two Different Standards?
When converting petabytes to exabytes, different tools may give slightly different results. This is because there are two competing standards for measuring digital storage:
| Standard | Base | 1 KB equals | Used By |
|---|---|---|---|
| SI Decimal | 1000 | 1,000 bytes | Hard drive manufacturers, macOS, network speeds |
| Binary (IEC) | 1024 | 1,024 bytes | Windows, Linux (partially), RAM specifications |
Why Does My Hard Drive Show Less Space Than Advertised?
This difference in standards explains the common "missing hard drive space" confusion.
Example: A "500 GB" Hard Drive
- Contains exactly: 500,000,000,000 bytes
- macOS (SI Decimal): Displays 500 GB (divides by 1,000³)
- Windows (Binary): Displays 465 GB (divides by 1,024³)
The Verdict: Same bytes, same drive—just different math. No space is actually missing.
Note: Our calculator defaults to SI decimal (base 1000) to match the box label. To match Windows, toggle the standard at the top of the calculator.
💡 Storage Engineer Tip
Manufacturers label drives using SI decimal (base 1000). Windows divides by 1024 instead—that's why a "1 TB" drive shows as 931 GB. Same bytes, different math.
