How to Convert Petabytes to Zettabytes

To convert petabytes to zettabytes, divide by 1,000,000 (using SI decimal). Both units measure storage capacity—the difference is scale. Try the how many PB in Zettabytes.

PB: A petabyte is 1,000 terabytes or 1,000,000,000,000,000 bytes. Used for large-scale enterprise and cloud storage. See also: how many Yottabytes in a PB.

ZB: A zettabyte is 1,000 exabytes or 10^21 bytes. Used to measure total global data storage. Check out our calculate Mib to ZB.

1 PB = 0.000001 ZB (using SI decimal standard) — or equivalently, 1 ZB = 1,000,000PB.

PB to ZB Conversion Formula

// Convert PB to ZB

ZB = PB × 0.000001

// Reverse: Convert ZB to PB

PB = ZB × 1,000,000

PB to ZB Conversion Examples

100 PB = 0.0001 ZB

256 PB = 0.000256 ZB

500 PB = 0.0005 ZB

1,000 PB = 0.001 ZB

2,048 PB = 0.002048 ZB

Binary Standard (Base 1024)

Using binary calculation: 1 PB = 0.000000953674316 ZB

100 PB = 0.000095367431641 ZB

1,000 PB = 0.000953674316 ZB

1,024 PB = 0.0009765625 ZB

What Is a Petabyte?

A petabyte is 1,000 terabytes or 1,000,000,000,000,000 bytes. Used for large-scale enterprise and cloud storage. Try the Yb to YiB conversion rate.

The petabyte is a SI decimal unit of digital information storage. It uses base 1,000 following the SI (International System of Units) standard. Related: converting Zebibytes Per Second to Tebibits Per Second.

Common uses: Data centers, cloud storage providers, scientific research, enterprise archives See also: Petabytes in Zebibytes.

1 PB = 8 × 10¹⁵ bits = 1 × 10¹⁵ bytes.

The petabyte can be abbreviated as PB; for example, 1 petabyte can be written as 1 PB.

SI Decimal vs Binary: Why Two Different Standards?

When converting petabytes to zettabytes, different tools may give slightly different results. This is because there are two competing standards for measuring digital storage:

Standard Base 1 KB equals Used By
SI Decimal 1000 1,000 bytes Hard drive manufacturers, macOS, network speeds
Binary (IEC) 1024 1,024 bytes Windows, Linux (partially), RAM specifications

Why Does My Hard Drive Show Less Space Than Advertised?

This difference in standards explains the common "missing hard drive space" confusion.

Example: A "500 GB" Hard Drive

  • Contains exactly: 500,000,000,000 bytes
  • macOS (SI Decimal): Displays 500 GB (divides by 1,000³)
  • Windows (Binary): Displays 465 GB (divides by 1,024³)

The Verdict: Same bytes, same drive—just different math. No space is actually missing.

Note: Our calculator defaults to SI decimal (base 1000) to match the box label. To match Windows, toggle the standard at the top of the calculator.

💡 Storage Engineer Tip

Manufacturers label drives using SI decimal (base 1000). Windows divides by 1024 instead—that's why a "1 TB" drive shows as 931 GB. Same bytes, different math.
