How to Convert Terabits to Exbibytes

To convert terabits to exbibytes, divide by 8 then adjust for scale. Since 1 byte = 8 bits, this conversion translates bit-based measurements to the byte-based units used for storage capacity. Learn more: how many Terabits in a EiB.

Tb measures data in bits—commonly used for memory addressing and low-level data specifications. You might also need: how many TB in Terabits.

EiB measures data in bytes—the standard unit for file sizes, storage capacity, and what you see in file explorers. See also: Gigabits to EiB.

1 Tb = 0.000000108420217 EiB (using SI decimal standard) — or equivalently, 1 EiB = 9,223,372Tb.

Tb to EiB Conversion Formula

// Convert Tb to EiB

EiB = Tb × 0.000000108420217

// Reverse: Convert EiB to Tb

Tb = EiB × 9,223,372

Tb to EiB Conversion Examples

100 Tb = 0.000010842021725 EiB

256 Tb = 0.000027755575616 EiB

500 Tb = 0.000054210108624 EiB

1,000 Tb = 0.000108420217 EiB

2,048 Tb = 0.000222044605 EiB

What Is a Terabit?

A terabit is 1,000 gigabits or 10^12 bits. Used for backbone network and data center connections. See also: convert Kib to Gibibytes.

The terabit is a SI decimal bit unit of digital information storage. It uses base 1,000 following the SI (International System of Units) standard. Check out our Exabytes Per Second to GiB/s calculator.

Common uses: Data center interconnects, backbone networks, high-capacity optical links Try the Tb to Zebibytes converter.

1 Tb = 1 × 10¹² bits = 125 × 10⁹ bytes.

The terabit can be abbreviated as Tb; for example, 1 terabit can be written as 1 Tb.

What Is a Exbibyte?

An exbibyte is 1,024 pebibytes or 2^60 bytes. Used for hyperscale storage in binary measurements. See also: Zebibytes to Exbibytes conversion.

The exbibyte is a IEC binary unit of digital information storage. It uses base 1,024 following the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) standard. See also: convert Zebibits to Zettabits.

Common uses: Hyperscale data centers, global storage statistics in binary, cloud provider capacity See also: Yobibits Per Second to Petabits Per Second calculator.

1 EiB = 9 × 10¹⁸ bits = 1 × 10¹⁸ bytes.

The exbibyte can be abbreviated as EiB; for example, 1 exbibyte can be written as 1 EiB.

SI Decimal vs Binary: Why Two Different Standards?

When converting terabits to exbibytes, different tools may give slightly different results. This is because there are two competing standards for measuring digital storage:

Standard Base 1 KB equals Used By
SI Decimal 1000 1,000 bytes Hard drive manufacturers, macOS, network speeds
Binary (IEC) 1024 1,024 bytes Windows, Linux (partially), RAM specifications

Why Does My Hard Drive Show Less Space Than Advertised?

This difference in standards explains the common "missing hard drive space" confusion.

Example: A "500 GB" Hard Drive

  • Contains exactly: 500,000,000,000 bytes
  • macOS (SI Decimal): Displays 500 GB (divides by 1,000³)
  • Windows (Binary): Displays 465 GB (divides by 1,024³)

The Verdict: Same bytes, same drive—just different math. No space is actually missing.

Note: Our calculator defaults to SI decimal (base 1000) to match the box label. To match Windows, toggle the standard at the top of the calculator.

💡 Storage Engineer Tip

The ~9.95% difference between binary and decimal units compounds at each level. A 1 TB drive shows as 931 GiB in Windows because of this standard mismatch—no space is actually lost.
