What Is a Yobibyte?

A yobibyte is 1,024 zebibytes or 2^80 bytes. The largest IEC binary unit currently defined. See also: Bits to Petabytes.

The yobibyte is a IEC binary unit of digital information storage. It uses base 1,024 following the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) standard. See also: bps → YB/s.

Common uses: Theoretical storage limits, far-future capacity projections, academic discussions Related: convert YiB to MB.

1 YiB = 10 × 10²⁴ bits = 1 × 10²⁴ bytes.

The yobibyte can be abbreviated as YiB; for example, 1 yobibyte can be written as 1 YiB.

What Is a Terabit?

A terabit is 1,000 gigabits or 10^12 bits. Used for backbone network and data center connections. You might also need: KB to Tb calculator.

The terabit is a SI decimal bit unit of digital information storage. It uses base 1,000 following the SI (International System of Units) standard. See also: Eb to KiB converter.

Common uses: Data center interconnects, backbone networks, high-capacity optical links Check out our GiB/s to Mibps.

1 Tb = 1 × 10¹² bits = 125 × 10⁹ bytes.

The terabit can be abbreviated as Tb; for example, 1 terabit can be written as 1 Tb.

SI Decimal vs Binary: Why Two Different Standards?

When converting yobibytes to terabits, different tools may give slightly different results. This is because there are two competing standards for measuring digital storage:

Standard Base 1 KB equals Used By
SI Decimal 1000 1,000 bytes Hard drive manufacturers, macOS, network speeds
Binary (IEC) 1024 1,024 bytes Windows, Linux (partially), RAM specifications

Why Does My Hard Drive Show Less Space Than Advertised?

This difference in standards explains the common "missing hard drive space" confusion.

Example: A "500 GB" Hard Drive

  • Contains exactly: 500,000,000,000 bytes
  • macOS (SI Decimal): Displays 500 GB (divides by 1,000³)
  • Windows (Binary): Displays 465 GB (divides by 1,024³)

The Verdict: Same bytes, same drive—just different math. No space is actually missing.

Note: Our calculator defaults to SI decimal (base 1000) to match the box label. To match Windows, toggle the standard at the top of the calculator.

💡 Storage Engineer Tip

The ~9.95% difference between binary and decimal units compounds at each level. A 1 TB drive shows as 931 GiB in Windows because of this standard mismatch—no space is actually lost.
